Coach Troy Will Coach Team USA; Nesty to Coach Team Suriname
GAINESVILLE, Fla. – Two of the members of Florida's swimming and diving staff have been chosen to coach at the FINA World Championships, set to start Sunday.
Head Coach Gregg Troy, who is entering his 20th season at Florida, will serve as the men's assistant coach, overseeing the 30 men on Team USA.
Associate head coach Anthony Nesty will also coach at the Championships, as the assistant coach of Team Suriname.
Coach Troy is very familiar with two of the men's swimmers he will be tutoring at Worlds: current Gator Caeleb Dressel and former Gator Conor Dwyer. Dressel is set to swim in the 50m and 100m Free races, as well as the 50m and 100m Fly. Dwyer is looking to claim his ninth World Championship medal, this time in the 4x200m Free Relay.
Troy has a wealth of experience coaching at World Championships, as he has served as both a head coach and assistant coach in the past. He mostly recently served as an assistant coach for the men's US World Championships team in 2007. Twice he has been named head coach for Worlds Championships, once with the women's team in 1998 and the other with the men's team in 2001.
Along with World Championship coaching experience, he has been on five Olympic coaching staffs (two-time head coach) and is a three-time U.S. Pan American Team Head Coach (1995, 1999, 2010).
Nesty, who is entering his 19th season on the Gators' coaching staff, has he own plethora of coaching experience. He has served as head coach of the Suriname Summer Olympic Team three times over the course of his career (2008, 2012, 2016).
He has also been the assistant coach of the Suriname National Swim Team and Cayman Islands National Team. The former Gator swimming also served as the United States National Team's assistant coach at the 2011 World University Games.
Nesty won a gold medal for Suriname at the 1991 World Championships in the 100m Fly. He is still the only person to have won an Olympic gold medal for the country, a feat he achieved in 1988 when he won the 100m Fly.
