GAINESVILLE, Fla. -- A month ago, Harrison Bader stopped by the Gators' hotel in Omaha to say hello to his former teammates during the College World Series. He was in town with the Memphis Redbirds, the Triple-A affiliate of the St. Louis Cardinals.
On Tuesday night, Bader was at Busch Stadium in the Cardinals' starting lineup. He scored the game-winning run in the ninth inning of his big-league debut on Jedd Gyorko's sacrifice fly.
It was a great moment for the former UF outfielder, who capped his college career with the Gators in 2015. St. Louis selected Bader in the third round and two years later, Bader was called up to the majors to replace injured center fielder Dexter Fowler.
He started the day in Memphis with his father, Louis Bader, in town for a visit. After receiving word he was on the way to the majors, Bader and his father hopped in a car for a special road trip.
St. Louis Post-Dispatch reporter Jose de Jesus Ortiz captured Bader's memorable day in this well-written column. It's worth a read.
Dougherty Howard
Washington Spirit rookie Meggie Dougherty Howard is starting to build a reputation as one of the best young players in the National Women's Soccer League.
If your perfect day is doing nothing other than chilling on the couch watching the Gators from midnight to midnight, then Thursday is your perfect day.
It's Florida's turn to take over the SEC Network for 24 hours starting in just a few hours. You have plenty of time to come up with a good excuse to tell your boss why you won't be coming to work.
Bader isn't the only former Gators baseball player on the move this week. Former UF closer Shaun Anderson was traded from the Boston Red Sox organization to San Francisco.
Anderson emerged as the team's closer in 2016 and tied the school record with 13 saves. Gators closer Michael Byrne shattered that record in 2017 as he saved 20 games to help Florida win its first national title.
Anderson, much more of a power pitcher than Byrne, was targeted by the Giants to boost the organization's pitching talent.
