Dressel Ties Phelps for Most Gold Medals at World Championship

Four Gators race on the final day of FINA; Dressel earns seventh gold medal

GAINESVILLE, Fla. – Caeleb Dressel (USA) earned his seventh gold medal of the FINA World Championships on the final day of competition, tying Michael Phelps (2007) for the most at one world championship.

Dressel's final medal came from the men's 42107

4x100m medley relay, where he and Team USA took gold with a time of 3:27.91. It was the fastest textile time for a men's 4x100m medley relay. The rising senior swam the butterfly on the third leg, giving the USA an insurmountable lead with a split of 49.76. The USA finished with 38 total medals, the most all-time.

Dressel was named Male Swimmer of the Championship Meet after his historic performance over the eight days. Team USA earned the title of Best Team of the Championship Meet after finishing with those 38 medals.

Gator alumna Elizabeth Beisel (USA) finished her 400m IM final with a time of 4:37.63, putting her seventh overall in the field. In the preliminary round, she finished third overall with a time of 4:36.18 to earn her place in the final. This was Beisel's 12th straight year swimming for the US National Team.

Rising senior Mark Szaranek (GBR) raced in his second event of the week on Sunday, competing in the 400m IM. He posted a time of 4:15.71, good for ninth place overall, putting him just outside of the final.

Liliana Szilagyi competed in her final event of the week, competing in the 4x100m medley relay with Team Hungary. The quartet finished in 10th place, posting a time of 4:03.08. The rising sophomore swam the fly for Hungary, finishing with a split of 58.32.
