Fans looking to support rescue and recovery efforts related to Hurricane Harvey are encouraged to go through the Red Cross and the Salvation Army.
GAINESVILLE, Fla. – To help bring awareness to the plight of the thousands of families impacted by Hurricane Harvey, the Florida football team will wear a special helmet decal when the Gators take on Michigan in their season opener on Saturday.
Almost the entire Gulf Coast region of the state has been affected.
"With what's going on in the Gulf Coast of Texas, we're going to have a truck loaded up of things to get down there to give to people who are in a tough bind," UF head football coach Jim McElwain said on Wednesday. "To honor them, fans will notice a decal on our helmet moving forward. We understand, living here in Florida, how devastating those things can be. We want to do whatever we can to help, and this is just a small part of that moving forward."
The University of Florida Athletic Association announced on Tuesday that it has collaborated with the Michigan Athletic Department and game organizers from the Advocare Classic, the Cotton Bowl and the Dallas Cowboys to encourage fans to donate to the Salvation Army and Red Cross to aid in relief efforts.
In addition to the Red Cross and Salvation Army options, a map of different shelters, pet shelters and food distribution centers around Texas can be found here.
"We are very mindful of the damage and destruction caused by Hurricane Harvey and are hopeful that Gators and Wolverines can come together to provide assistance to those who are in need," said Athletics Director Scott Stricklin.
Florida will open its 2017 football season against the Michigan Wolverines at 3:30 p.m. ET on Saturday at AT&T Stadium in Arlington, Texas.
