The UAA installed back-lit lettering on the four wing walls of the stadium recently.
GAINESVILLE, Fla. -- "The Swamp is lit" is a phrase known to be used when the Gators make a big play at home and more than 90,000 fans inside Ben Hill Griffin Stadium erupt.
The saying has another meaning now each time the newly installed back-lit lettering on the stadium's four wing walls are turned on.
Prior to Hurricane Irma tearing through the state, the neon lights were scheduled to debut in the nighttime home opener against Northern Colorado. Instead, they will light up on Saturday when the Gators host Tennessee at 3:30 p.m.
The lights add a cool touch to The Swamp, a colorful addition to the venerable home of the Gators. For a look at more upgrades this season at The Swamp, check out this release.
Meanwhile, the 87-year-old stadium experienced minimal effects from Hurricane Irma. The most visible sign that Irma passed through late Sunday night and into the wee hours of Monday morning is the stadium lettering on the press box.
The storm blew off three letters on the "Florida Field" signage and they are unlikely to be installed by Saturday as University Athletic Association officials work with vendors on replacing the lettering.
As for those bright neon letters, they will be on for everyone to see. Check them out (photos by Forrest Gmitro):
