BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – Following their impressive performances at last weekend's Razorback Invitational, senior jumper KeAndre Bates and freshman quarter-miler Benjamin Lobo Vedel earned weekly awards from the Southeastern Conference, as announced by the league office Tuesday afternoon.
Bates posted a nation-leading mark in the triple jump (16.48 meters / 54 feet, 1 inch) and the country's third-ranked long jump mark (7.88 meters / 25 feet, 10.25 inches). The El Paso, Texas native leads the nation in the triple jump by 15 centimeters. Bates is also the only Division I jumper ranked in the top five nationally in both horizontal jumps.
Lobo Vedel made his collegiate 400 meters debut Saturday with the fourth-fastest time in the country (46.14 seconds). The Aalborg, Denmark native is the fastest freshman in the nation by 0.27 seconds. The time also earned him a third Danish record, going along with the 300 meters and indoor 200 meters national records he broke in January.
Lobo Vedel also split 45.52 seconds for Florida's distance medley relay team, which ran the ninth-ranked time in program history and the sixth-fastest time in the country.
The Gators, once again ranked No. 1 on the men's side and No. 5 on the women's side of the USTFCCCA National Team Rankings, see their throwers travel to LSU's Bayou Bengal Invitational Friday. The rest of the Gators will return to action next weekend at Clemson's Tiger Paw Invitational and the Iowa State Classic.
