GAINESVILLE, Fla. —It'll be an eventful weekend for Angie McGinnis.
Friday night, the two-time Southeastern Conference Volleyball Player of the Year will be one of eight "Gator Greats" inducted into the University of Florida Athletic Hall of Fame, alongside the likes of football standouts Lito Shepherd and Reggie Nelson, as well as Olympic swimming medalist Caroline Burckle and NCAA hurdles champion Josh Walker.
Angie McGinnis then ...
"I'm super excited," McGinnis said.
She'll need to enjoy the banquet and event because the next day the pressure really will be on.
Come Saturday afternoon, McGinnis will be at the 50-yard line of the "Swamp" to take her turn as honorary "Ms. Two Bits" before the No. 13 Gators (6-2, 4-2) face SEC foe Missouri (4-4, 0-4) in the team's annual homecoming game. It's been 11 years since McGinnis suited up for Coach Mary Wise on her way to becoming the program's all-time leader in assists, a record she still holds, with 5,784, along with the mark for assists per set (12.88). The high stakes of returning to the athletic arena while wearing some version of the traditional George Edmondson-like ensemble (yellow shirt, khakis and orange-and-blue tie) will have its own challenges.
Starting with some research.
As an athlete competing during the falls, McGinnis and her UF teammates usually were practicing or traveling between matches on football Saturdays. If they did get to home games, they often got there in the middle of the game, and not always in time to see Edmondson do his Two Bits thing.
What's more, the whole honorary gig was foreign to her.
"I had to go to YouTube for this," said McGinnis, now 31 and living in Chapel Hill, N.C., where she works in the marketing field and currently is taking classes toward her real estate license. "When they first asked me, I was like, 'I'm not the cheerleading type, so I don't know if I could do it.' I realize now, it's an honor." ... and Angie McGinnis Hasseman (and family) now.
And an opportunity to hear Florida fans not only to cheer for her once again, but to bring her family back and introduce them to Gator Nation.
For four seasons, McGinnis treated volleyball fans to a career that extended beyond her prowess as an elite setter. She also rang up 560 kills and remains ranked 10th in the record books for career hitting percentage at .366. She also ranks 10th all-time in blocks with 388. A native of Fraser, Mich. McGinnis became just the fourth player in school history to be named an AVCA All-American three times and finished her career with nearly 60 team match, season and career records.
She's now married to University of North Carolina head assistant wrestling coach Bryce Hasseman. They have three children: Levi (4), Isaiah (3) and JJ (9 months). They will all be at her side to share what should be an incredible family moment.
A couple moments, actually.
"I realize now how special this is," McGinnis said. "But I think what I'm most excited about is getting my young ones back there and showing them where Momma went to school."
