Gators send three competitors south to Lakewood Ranch
LAKEWOOD RANCH, Fla. – The University of Florida women's tennis team returns to action this weekend as it sends three to compete in the Dick Vitale Intercollegiate Clay Court Classic, Nov. 2-4.
Freshman Marlee Zein, junior Tsveta Dimitrova and sophomore Katie Kubicz will represent the Gators in the event held at Lakewood Ranch Golf & Country Club in Lakewood Ranch, Fla.
All three saw action at the ITA Southeastern Regional Championships which occurred Oct. 18 -22 at Georgia Tech and all three finished with 2-1 records. Zein advanced all the way to the round of 16 while Dimitrova and Kubicz both notched a win in the main draw and consolation bracket after falling in the round of 32.
The tournament is a unique one in two respects, it is the only collegiate event played on clay courts and a portion of the tournament's proceeds go to the V Foundation for Cancer Research.
The Clay Court Classic features both a men's and women's bracket with singles and doubles. The singles bracket features a 32-player draw while the doubles draw is comprised of 16 teams. As far as the field goes, the SEC, ACC, BIG 10 and PAC 12 all have entries in the event.
Competition begins Friday morning at 8:30 a.m. ET with singles play.
