GAINESVILLE, Fla. – Defensive lineman Jachai Polite earned the Walter Camp National Defensive Player of the Week honors, as the Walter Camp Football Foundation announced on Sunday.
The Daytona Beach, Fla. native recorded six tackles (four solo), including 3.5 for losses and 2.5 quarterback sacks in Florida's streak-ending victory over Florida State. He added one forced fumble and one quarterback hurry.
Polite, who entered Saturday tied for third in the FBS in forced fumbles, became the eighth Gator—and first since Marcus Maye (2015)—in history to log five forced fumbles in a season. Clifford Charlton (six in 1986) holds the UF record. His seven career forced fumbles are tied with Marcus Maye (2012-16), Anthone Lott (1993-96), Lawrence Wright (1993-96), and Ben Hanks (1992-95) for the fourth-highest total in school history.
The junior has now recorded 11 sacks this season, tying Derrick Harvey (2006), Clifford Charlton (1986), Alonzo Johnson (1984), and Wilber Marshall (1981) for the fifth-highest single-season total in school history. Polite also entered 2018 with nine tackles for loss in 19 career games; he finished the regular season with 16.
Polite is the ninth Florida player to earn Walter Camp National Player of the Week honors since 2004, and the second this season, joining defensive teammate Vosean Joseph (LB, Oct. 7).
