IN THE SPOTLIGHT:Â
Jack Leftwich - After giving up a single to the first batter he faced, Leftwich retired the next 13 hitters and finished with just two hits allowed over 4.1 innings in his first career start. He struck out five and had one walk. Leftwich earned his first career win after being pulled due to pitch count limit.Â
FROM THE COACH: Head coach Kevin O'Sullivan on Jack Leftwich - "I think it was a really, really good test for him because that was an older FAU team. He was really good. That's about as good a start for a freshman as we've had [in my time at Florida]. Hudson Randall's start in 2010 against UCF, Logan Shore the same thing I think in 2014 against UCF too. He's right there with them. His stuff was crisp, he's got a great arm and he's got a great future. He threw some really quality off-speed pitches too."
On the offense - "These midweek games, the wind was blowing in from right field -- India obviously got a hold of that one ball -- but these midweek games you kind of lull yourself to sleep. In the past, I think we've made some mistakes where we've kind of relied on our bats and you look up in the sixth inning and you're having a bad night offensively. So you're almost trying to force the action just a bit more by running the bases, putting hit-and-runs on, that type of thing. I think forcing the action, putting a little more pressure on the defense, may ignite our offense a little more in these midweek games."
STANDOUT STAT:Â
50Â - The Gators' offense has totaled 50 hits already through four games (50-for-139, .360). 23 of the 50 hits have gone for extra bases as UF has 15 doubles, one triple and seven home runs.
UP NEXT: Florida hosts Bethune-Cookman Wednesday at 6 p.m. The game will broadcast live on SEC Network+ and the Gator IMG Sports Network.
