Seniors Lead Way in Win at Miami

WHAT HAPPENED: Florida beat Miami 7-3 on Friday night in Coral Gables behind five RBI from its pair of seniors, Nick Horvath and JJ Schwarz

Miami jumped all over Brady Singer in the first inning with a two-run homer from Michael Perez and RBI single by Michael Amditis. The Canes' five hits in the opening frame matched their total in 7.2 innings in last year's matchup against Singer.

Florida got a couple runs back in the second inning on Nick Horvath's two-run shot over the left field scoreboard.

Horvath then gave UF the lead in the fourth inning with a two-run double into the left field corner. His four RBI set a new career high.

JJ Schwarz hit his third home run of the season to extend the Gators lead to 5-3 in the fifth inning.

Singer held the Canes scoreless after the first until he was pulled after the fifth inning. He finished with three runs allowed on five hits, no walks and four strikeouts.

Blake Reese extended the Gators lead in the eighth inning with a two-run single that brought home Schwarz and Jonathan India for a 7-3 lead.

Freshman Tommy Mace, who took over for Singer in the sixth inning, was unhittable. He earned his first career save with 4.0 scoreless innings, allowing just one walk and no hits.

IN THE SPOTLIGHT: Nick Horvath – Horvath had a career-high four RBI on the night, hitting a two-run homer in the second inning and following with a two-run double in the sixth. Entering the night, he had not hit a home run since May 8, 2016.

FROM THE COACH: Head coach Kevin O'Sullivan on the team's performance - "First road game, first road series, a lot of firsts. Credit Miami's hitters, they came out very aggressive and we left some balls up in the zone and they took advantage of it. Brady was Brady, he threw up several zeros after that [first inning] and we picked it up offensively. I mentioned that to the team at the end about Brady, you might get him for one inning but he's not going to give up, he's not going to give in. The two-run homer by Nick to pull us within one early was really big at that point in the game.

"JJ's still swinging the bat great. He had a three-hit night. Keenan Bell had a good night at the plate with three hits. Blake Reese's hit in the three hole to drive in two runs late was huge. Obviously, Nick Horvath with the double and home run. It was a good night offensively for us."

On Tommy Mace - "We haven't had many freshman come down in an environment like this and throw four scoreless and not give up a hit. He had one walk in the ninth but he was just outstanding. He's mature beyond his years, he's got great makeup. It was a really good night for him."

STANDOUT STAT: – Junior Nelson Maldonado has a seven-game hit streak dating back to the end of last season.

UP NEXT: Florida and Miami will meet again Saturday night at 7 p.m. Junior Jackson Kowar will match up against Miami sophomore Greg Veliz. The game will be available for streaming on WatchESPN. Live radio will be broadcast via the Gators IMG Sports Network.
