Trio of Gators Wins Rings with Super Bowl LII Victory

Overall, 52 former Gators have made 70 appearances in Super Bowl history, with a former UF player on the winning team 21 times.

MINNEAPOLIS  – Three former University of Florida football players were crowned Super Bowl champions on Sunday following the Philadelphia Eagles' 41-33 win over the New England Patriots in Super Bowl LII. Philly employs former Gators Trey Burton, Caleb Sturgis and Jaylen Watkins.

During Sunday's game, tight end Burton threw a 2-yard touchdown pass at the end of the first half in what will be remembered as one of the greatest plays in Super Bowl history.

Eagles general manager Howie Roseman is also a UF grad.

Overall for the season, Burton was solid for the Eagles in a backup role as he tallied 24 catches for 260 yards and five touchdowns. Defensive back Jaylen Watkins contributed 17 tackles and two tackles-for-loss across 12 games in the regular season. Sturgis was 3-for-3 on field goal attempts prior to sustaining his season-ending injury in Week 1 against Washington.

On the flip side, New England running back Mike Gillislee was inactive due to injury throughout the entire playoffs. The fifth-year veteran gained 383 yards on the ground and scored five touchdowns in his first year with the Patriots.

UF has had a former player on a Super Bowl roster for 16 straight years, dating back to the 2003 season when offensive linemen Kenyatta Walker and Lomas Brown helped the Tampa Bay Buccaneers beat Mo Collins and the Oakland Raiders in Super Bowl XXXVII. The 16-year streak stands as the second longest of its kind in the SEC, as Georgia and LSU are tied for the longest streak at 17 years.

In addition, it marks the sixth time in the last seven years a former Gator has hoisted the Lombardi Trophy at the end of the night.
