Gators Tally Five NCAA Leads in Outdoor Opener
Friday, March 23, 2018 | Track and Field
Florida totaled 17 times and marks that rank fifth or higher nationally
TALLAHASSEE, Fla. – Though it is extremely early in the outdoor track and field season, Florida notched five NCAA-leading times and marks, in addition to another 12 that ranked in the top five nationally at Friday's Florida State Relays. There were also five marks posted to the program's All-Time Outdoor Top 10 lists.
The national leads came from Clayton Brown (triple jump), Grant Holloway (long jump), Darrielle McQueen (long jump), and the men's and women's 4x400 relay teams.
Brown posted 16.40 meters (53 feet, 9.75 inches) to climb to No. 7 on the Gators' All-Time Top 10. In his first run of the outdoor season, Holloway leapt 8.00 meters (26 feet, 3 inches), while McQueen's top mark (6.43 meters / 21 feet, 1.25 inches) came on her sixth and final attempt.
Reigning outdoor national champion KeAndre Bates (7.78 meters / 25 feet, 6.25 inches) and freshman Enzo Hodebar (7.55 meters / 24 feet, 9.25 inches) finished right behind Holloway, posting the second- and third-best marks in the nation.
The men's hammer throw was another highlight of the day, with junior Anders Eriksson missing his school record by a centimeter but breaking the facility record and posting No. 2 mark in the nation (71.75 meters / 235 feet, 4 inches). Freshman Thomas Mardal debuted with the No. 3 mark in school history (69.30 meters / 227 feet, 4 inches), which also puts him fifth nationally. Redshirt junior AJ McFarland completed the Gators' sweep with a one-plus-meter personal record, improving his No. 5-ranked mark on the program's All-Time Top 10 (67.31 meters / 220 feet, 10 inches).
Staying with the men's throws, redshirt freshman Connor Bandel cracked the program's All-Time Top 10 in the shot put. His winning mark of 18.76 meters (61 feet, 6.75 inches) ranks sixth on UF's list and third nationally.
In the final event of the night, sixth-year senior javelin thrower Avione Allgood competed for the first time since May 2016. Allgood, a transfer from Oklahoma who sat out last season due to injury, threw 53.59 meters (175 feet, 10 inches) from a short approach, ranking her fifth on the school's All-Time Top 10, as well as fourth nationally.
Next up for the Gators is hosting the Pepsi Florida Relays Thursday through Saturday on Percy Beard Track and James G. Pressly Stadium. Information on the first of Florida's two home meets is available at this link.
HEARING OUT (COACH) HOLLOWAY
Head coach Mike Holloway on the day as a whole…
"It was a lot of fun. Splitting the relays and stuff like that. It was good to see. After coming off a very emotional indoor season, to come out here and shake the rust off and get things going again I thought was pretty good. I want to thank [Florida State head coach] Bob Braman and his staff. They put on a wonderful meet and they were very hospitable."
Coach Holloway on some of the day's standouts…
"I was very impressed with Cory Poole, running under 14 seconds his first outdoor meet. The men's hammer throwers were phenomenal—Anders [Eriksson] right at his PR, the other two throwing PRs. Lloydricia [Cameron] competing and doing well in three events. Thought the 4x1 did well. Very impressed with Michael Timpson [Jr.] today. Darrielle McQueen, Grant [Holloway[ in the long jump; we could go on all day.
"Great overall team effort. It was just good to see everyone come out here, get focused, knock the rust off. We all know we've got Florida Relays next week. Got to get back to Gainesville and get rested up for that monster."
Coach Holloway on Avione Allgood's return to competition after almost two years…
"Watching her, after the injuries she fought through, it was emotional. You could see the fear in her eyes a little bit. But she's a great athlete; she's got a great coach in [associate head] Coach [Steve] Lemke. Watching them navigate through that process tonight was great. It just speaks to who she is and what we can expect from her in the future. Now she knows she's okay, and from a short approach, to throw that far, we're going to be okay."
