Gators Beat Seminoles, Sweep Sunshine Showdown

No. 1-ranked Florida's recent dominance against Florida State continued on Tuesday night in Tallahassee.

WHAT HAPPENED: Florida stole the momentum from No. 10 Florida State at every turn, beating the Seminoles 6-3 in Tallahassee on Tuesday night in the Fresh from Florida Sunshine Showdown.

FSU scored in three separate innings, and every time the Gators answered in the next frame to kill any momentum for the home team at Dick Howser Stadium.

With the win, Florida has won eight in a row against Florida State and 13 of the last 14 against the Noles.

Cooper Swanson broke the tie with a solo home run to left field to put Florida State ahead 1-0 in the third inning.

Florida responded with a rally in the fourth to take the lead. Jonathan India extended his hitting streak to 20 games with a single and scored on Wil Dalton's double down the left-field line.

Austin Langworthy and Blake Reese had back-to-back singles to bring two more runs in for a 3-1 lead.

In the fifth, FSU got a run back after starting the inning with a pair of walks. A couple of groundouts moved the runners around to bring in a run.

The Gators responded immediately, getting the run back and extending the lead to three in the next frame. The first two batters of the inning reached on a hit batter and walk and JJ Schwarz singled up the middle to bring in a run.

Langworthy doubled into the gap to add another run for a 5-2 lead through six.

FSU cut the deficit to two in the bottom of the seventh with a solo home run from Jackson Lueck, but Schwarz got it back with a blast of his own, his eighth homer of the season.

Florida starter Tommy Mace went four innings and allowed two runs on three hits before giving way to classmate Jack Leftwich in the fifth.

Leftwich went 2 2/3 innings before giving up the solo home run in the seventh, which snapped a scoreless streak of 13 2/3 innings over his last five appearances.

Andrew Baker and Michael Byrne pitched the final 2 1/3 innings without allowing a run as Byrne picked up his eighth save of the year.

IN THE SPOTLIGHT: JJ Schwarz – With a home run and two RBI on the night, Schwarz has eight home runs and 25 RBI in his career against Florida State.

FROM THE COACH: Head coach Kevin O'Sullivan on tonight's game: "I think they scored one in the third and we answered back in the top half of the fourth. Every time they scored we were fortunate enough to score and kind of grab the momentum back. I've been here enough to know when the momentum kind of shifts to their dugout, sometimes it's hard to get back. Answering back was the story of the game. We just kept putting pressure on them, we made no errors on the night, two freshmen pitching in a place like this, it's not easy. [Mace and Leftwich] to give up three runs in 6 2/3 innings, I thought they did a really nice job."

STANDOUT STAT: 10+ – With 11 hits on the night, the Gators have now had 10 or more hits in seven of the last eight games. The only game they didn't reach double digits they had nine hits in an 8-4 win against Florida Gulf Coast.

UP NEXT: Florida will host Missouri for a three-game series at McKethan Stadium beginning Friday night at 6:30. Saturday's game starts at 5 p.m. and the finale on Sunday starts at 1 p.m.

All three games will stream live on SEC Network+ and broadcast via the Gators IMG Sports Network.
