David Cracks Collegiate All-Time Top 10; Gators Post Five NCAA Top 5s
Saturday, April 28, 2018 | Track and Field
Florida closed its final championship tune-up meet on a strong note
Both the men's and women's triple jump were adrenaline-filled, action-packed competitions. The former produced the top seven collegiate jumpers of the season, while the latter saw David become the No. 7-ranked performer in collegiate history.
David broke Ciarra Brewer's four-year-old school record (13.91 meters / 45 feet, 7.75 inches) twice, posting a mark of 13.97 meters (45 feet, 10 inches) on her third attempt, and immediately following it with a massive hop, skip, and jump of 14.13 meters (46 feet, 4.25 inches). The Lamentin, Guadeloupe native's jump was the 15th-farthest in collegiate history. David only sits behind American and collegiate record holder, Georgia's Keturah Orji, in the national rankings.

On the men's side, reigning national champion KeAndre Bates finished with a national lead of 16.69 meters (54 feet, 9.25 inches), while sophomore Clayton Brown logged a wind-aided 16.50 meters (54 feet, 1.75 inches) to take the No. 4 ranking on the national descending order list.

Brown's top jump was good for the national lead through the opening round, and it held until the fifth round, when Bates took it away with a mark of 16.58 meters (54 feet, 4.75 inches). In the sixth and final round, Kansas' Barden Adams moved ahead of Bates by a centimeter. But Bates responded with his 16.69-meter jump on his final run, thus securing the national lead.
Sixth-year senior javelin thrower Avione Allgood ascended to fifth on the national descending order list with a huge season best of 55.73 meters (182 feet, 10 inches), topping a field that included current NCAA leader Mackenzie Little of Stanford. That throw also strengthened her hold on the No. 5-ranked mark on Florida's All-Time Top 10. Allgood's previous season best was 53.59 meters (175 feet, 10 inches).

Lost in the madness of both triple jump competitions was the fact senior Darrielle McQueen opened her season with a mark of 13.37 meters (43 feet, 10.5 inches). McQueen ranks 14 on the triple jump national descending order list.'
The Gators also broke a 23-year-old school record in the men's distance medley relay, with the quartet of Sam Ahrenholz, Jabari Hill, Kyren Hollis, and Jack Guyton combining for a time of 9:35.90. The previous record was 9:36.32.
Also in the relays, the women's 4x400 relay team of Taylor Manson, Taylor Sharpe, Sharrika Barnett (50.84 split), and Nikki Stephens took second in 3:31.21, moving them to fourth in the national rankings. And although they did not lower their season best, the men's 4x400 relay squad of Benjamin Lobo Vedel, Chantz Sawyers, Kunle Fasasi, and Grant Holloway (44.54 split) provided the crowd with arguably the most thrilling race of the weekend.
Florida opens championship season in two weeks at the SEC Championships, which are May 11-13 in Knoxville, Tenn.
HEARING OUT (COACH) HOLLOWAY
Head coach Mike Holloway on Yanis David becoming the No. 7 collegiate performer of all time…
"With Yanis, it was just phenomenal watching her compete today. The girl from Kentucky went to the lead, watching Yanis get on the runway, she didn't just come running down as hard as she could. She got focused and she worked on the things she needed to do to jump farther. That was great to watch. Phenomenal job by her."
Coach Holloway on the day's other notable performances…
"Thought KeAndre Bates was great today. He's starting to get that spark back, that KeAndre magic, as we like to call it. And also very proud of Clayton Brown today. Very impressed with Avione Allgood. She's just getting a little bit better, a little bit better each week. Anyone who knows [Associate Head] Coach [Steve] Lemke and the way he coaches the javelin … she'll be at her best when it counts the most. Thought Amanda Froeynes did a great job PRing in three of her four events, good long jump as well. We had a good day in the field.
"In the relays, we could have been better in a couple places. We had a little mishap in the 4x100, but, hey, I'm the sprints coach. I'm not blaming them. I've got to coach them better. On the women's side, thought we did a good job in the 4x400. Just have to get healthy there. Men's side, great anchor leg by Grant, great effort by the other guys to put him in position so we could win it.
"The biggest thing is we came out of here relatively healthy, so we're in a position now to get back to Gainesville, get back to training, and just start getting razor-sharp so we can be competitive for the championship season."
