LOS ANGELES, Calif. – The Collegiate Women Sports Award presented by Honda went to Stanford swimmer Simone Manuel Monday evening in a nationally televised show on CBS Sports Network. This is the first time since the 1995-96 season that consecutive women have been both from the same school and the same sport (UConn basketball).
The Collegiate Women Sports Award brings together the 12 student-athletes who represent the top in NCAA-sanctioned sports. The 12 were named to three finalists during the show: Simone Manuel (Stanford/swimming), Maggie Ewen (Arizona State/track & field), A'ja Wilson (South Carolina/basketball).
"Being here has been such a great opportunity," Alhassan said. "The best part has been meeting all of these incredible women and getting to know them and their journeys."
Since 1978, Gators have claimed 23 Honda Sport Awards, with Alhassan earning the first volleyball Honda Award in Florida history.
One Gator earned the top collegiate female athlete of the year twice in her career. Gator Great swimmer Tracy Caulkins shared the 1983-84 Broderick Cup (previous name of award) with Southern California's Cheryl Miller and also won as a freshman in 1981-82. Gator softball's Lauren Haeger was among the final three for the 2015 honor. A Gator has been named their sport's winner 23 times since 1978.
