Deacon Liput is the second Gator taken on day two of the draft and fifth overall
GAINESVILLE, Fla.—University of Florida senior shortstop Deacon Liput was selected in the 10th round (314 overall) in the 2018 Major League Baseball Draft by the Los Angeles Dodgers.
Liput is the second Florida player to be drafted today joining JJ Schwarz (8th round). In total, the Gators have had five players chosen in this year's draft. Jonathan India (5th overall), Brady Singer (18th overall) and Jackson Kowar (33rd overall) all went in the first round last night, marking the first time in school history the Gators have had three players selected in the first round of the same MLB Draft.
This is the third time the junior has been drafted and the second consecutive year the Dodgers have chosen him. Coming out of high school, he was selected by the Yankees in the 39th round in 2014 and in the 29th round by Los Angeles in 2017.
Liput has been a fixture up the middle of the diamond since arriving in Gainesville. The Brooks Wallace Award semifinalist has played in 187 games while making 184 starts in his three seasons. Defensively, Liput is 12 assists away from entering the top-10 on the Gators career list at 510.
The junior is currently on pace for a career year at the plate with a .286 average, eight home runs, 36 runs batted in and 43 runs scores.
The pick Liput was the final one of day two of the draft. The remaining 30 rounds will take place tomorrow with rounds 11 set to begin at 12 p.m.
