Schwarz becomes the fourth Florida player to be selected in 2018 MLB Draft
GAINESVILLE, Fla.—University of Florida senior catcher JJ Schwarz was selected in the eighth round (233 overall) in the 2018 Major League Baseball Draft by the Oakland A's.
Schwarz joins teammates Jonathan India (5th overall), Brady Singer (18th overall) and Jackson Kowar (33rd overall) as the fourth Florida player to be drafted this year.
This is the third time the senior has been drafted. Coming out of high school, he was selected by the Brewers in the 17th round in 2014 and in the 38th round by the Tampa Bay Rays in 2017.
Schwarz is in the top-10 all-time in games played, games started, at-bats, hits, runs scored, doubles, home runs, runs batted in, total bases, walks and sacrifice flies. He is the all-time program leader in games started (262) and sacrifice flies (24) while ranking second in games played (262), at-bats (970), runs batted in (235) and total bases (513).
The Johnny Bench Award semifinalist has hit at a .300 clip over his four seasons in Gainesville amassing 49 home runs and 59 doubles.
He was recently named a First Team All-SEC selection after posting a .325 batting average and 12 home runs to go along with a career-best .404 on-base percentage in 55 games played
