GAINESVILLE, Fla. - Duarte Vale was recognized for his success in the classroom during the 2017-18 school year when he was named to the SEC First-Year Academic Honor Roll, as the Southeastern Conference announced Wednesday.
During his freshman campaign, Vale (Cascais, Portugal) played in 41 doubles matches and earned a 25-16 record. He and junior McClain Kessler earned an at-large bid to the ITA National Fall Championships and advanced to the quarterfinals. The duo also advanced to the Elite Eight of the NCAA Individual Championships, garnering the All-American honor. In singles play, Vale posted an 18-14 record and ended the season ranked No. 98.
Combined with the six upperclassmen – Jordan Belga, Johannes Ingildsen, Kessler, Alfredo Perez, Chase Perez-Blanco and Joshua Wardell- who earned spots on the SEC Spring Academic Honor Roll, the UF men's tennis team had seven players recognized for their achievements during the last school year. Those seven have tied the team's record of SEC Academic Honor Roll selections (2015, 2014, 2009) and it's only the fourth time in program history that more than six Gators were recognized for their academic excellence.
Wednesday's announcement brings Florida's total of student-athletes named to a 2017-18 SEC Academic Honor Roll to 315. Florida placed 247 on the SEC Academic Honor Rolls (85 on fall list; 63 winter, 99 on spring) and 68 on the First-Year Honor Roll.
To be recognized to the SEC First-Year Academic Honor Roll, each student-athlete must 1) have a GPA of 3.00 for either the preceding academic year or have a cumulative GPA of 3.00 or above at the nominating institution; 2) be on scholarship, a letter winner; 3) have completed 24 semester hours of non-remedial credit at the nominating institution; and 4) have been a member of the varsity team for the sport's entire NCAA Championship segment.
