Highlights
GAINESVILLE, Fla. – The No. 4 Florida Gators fell to No. 7 Southern California in four sets on Friday night to open the Bubly Invitational.
USC took the first set 25-18, while the Gators fought back to even it a 1-1 after winning the second set 25-16. UF dropped the third set 25-14 and couldn't overcome the early 13-6 deficit in the fourth set, falling 25-21.
Redshirt sophomore
Holly Carlton put on a career-performance for Florida, totaling 16 kills and hitting .303. Freshman
Thayer Hall was the only other Gator in double-figure kills, posting 12 on the night.
With Hall's 12 kills, she sits at 52 for the season, becoming the fastest freshman Gator in program history to reach the 50-kill milestone.
The Trojans' two power lefts – Brooke Botkin and Khalia Lanier – went for 20 and 14 kills, respectively. The freshman setter Raquel Lazaro dished out 41 assists in the victory.
How it Happened
The Gators got down 10-2 in the first set and could not fight their way out of the hole. The squad got to within four points at 18-14, but the Trojans went on a 7-4 run to close out the set.
UF came out swinging in the second set, hitting .382 as a team behind seven kills from Carlton. The 17 team kills in the set were the most produced in one frame during the evening.
Florida once again found itself down in 10-2 in the third set, but a string of four serves – including two service aces – by
Macy Phillips pulled the team to within four at 11-7. The Trojans were able to put together a 14-7 run behind seven Gator errors.
In the final set, the Gators were down 22-14, but battled back to put the score within striking distance at 24-21. Although Carlton recorded six kills in the frame, USC's Botkin posted her 20th kill of the night for match point.
Florida returns back to action on Saturday at 5 p.m., when the team takes on Louisville. The match will be streamed on SEC Network +.

Thoughts from Coach Wise
- "When you have two All-American lefts, you are going to win a lot of matches. As poorly as we passed, there were plenty of times that they struggled even more. Our servers did a job on that. The difference is that they have the talent to play out-of-system. We just don't have that many of those type of players. We need to be in system to score."
