Ode to Andy Samberg Leads to 'Two Bits' Gig

GAINESVILLE, Fla. — Jonathan Frish was told he has cousins on his mother's side who either went to the University of Florida, or had some sort of UF ties. Beyond that, though, the orange and blue in Frish's blood was all his.
And now he gets to spill it, "Mr. Two Bits" style, Saturday when the Gators take on Colorado State at Spurrier/Florida Field.
Frish is the winner of the annual contest to be the season's honorary student "Mr. Two Bits." Frish's video entry, a knockoff of a viral Andy Samberg piece, out-polled his four competitors on FloridaGators.com Sunday and earned him the right to don the yellow shirt and khaki pants and perform the iconic pregame chant.
"I'm thrilled," said Frish, already with a UF degree in political science and set to graduate from his master's program in international business in December. "It'll be an honor to carry on the tradition of all the other Two Bitses."
In 2007, Samberg, of "Saturday Night Live" fame, and his dry-humor comedy troop known as The Lonely Island made a video called "We Like Sportz." When Frish began brainstorming a video concept to submit to the University Athletic Association's marketing department for the contest he decided to borrow from one of his favorite entertainers.
"I stripped the lyrics and made them more UF related," Frish said.
So "We Like Sportz" became "We Like the Gators."
Take a look.
The polling wasn't close. Frish buried the competition (all the videos here). Now, his final semester at UF will include a once-in-a-lifetime memory.
He'll have a couple tough acts to follow, though. The 2018 season-opening Mr. Two Bits was former Gators star and NFL analyst Cris Collinsworth. Before the Kentucky game, former gymnast Bridget Sloan, a world and multi-time NCAA champion, revealed a leotard under her button-down shirt and executed a back flip.
Your turn, kid.
"I'm not capable of doing any flips or anything that involves flexibility," he said.
That's OK. The conventional, tried and true "Two Bits" method always works just fine. Even for first-generation Gators.
