Gators claim three doubles titles on Day 2 of UVA Masters

Florida advances two into the semifinals of the singles' draw in Charlottesville. Cacciatore twins advance to semifinals of the Gamecock Fall Invite doubles draw.

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va./COLUMBIA, S.C.– Florida's doubles' pairs found success in Virginia on Saturday morning.  The Gators are bringing home three championships from the doubles draws at the UVA Masters.  Florida will have a chance to pick up two more championships on Sunday in the singles draw at UVA and the doubles draw of the Gamecock Fall Invitational.

UVA Masters:

Doubles went as scripted for the Gators on Saturday at the Snyder Tennis Center in Charlottesville.  The Orange and Blue won all three draws at the UVA Masters on the final day of doubles competition.

Sam Riffice and Andy Andrade won the first Gators' doubles title in the blue draw.  The second seeded freshman/sophomore duo downed Jackie Tang and Adam Ambrozy of Columbia 6-4 in the finals.

Duarte Vale and McClain Kessler claimed the second Gators' doubles title.  The second seeded duo in the white draw defeated SEC conference foe Mississippi State's Florian Broska and Strahinja Rakic in a 6-4 decision for the championship.  This victory marks the first doubles title for Kessler and Vale, who earned 2018 Doubles All-American honors.

Lukas Greif and Brian Berdusco capped off the doubles championship trifecta. The second seeded Gators upset the top seed from NC State in the orange draw.  Greif, a freshman from Indiana, and Berdusco, a sophomore transfer from Pepperdine, battled in a tough match against Ivan and Igor Saveljic but claimed a 7-6 victory and the championship.

In singles, all eight Gators advanced to the round of 16 but only three prevailed to the round of eight. Andrade defeated Alex Lebedev of Notre Dame to set up a quarterfinals match against fellow Gators' Crawford.  Crawford defeated Yuval Solomon of Wake Forest in the round of 16 and then advanced to the semifinals with a victory over his teammate, Andrade.  Ingildsen defeated Hamish Stewart of Tulane and Ambrozy of Columbia on his way to the singles draw semifinals.

THOUGHTS FROM COACH BRYAN SHELTON:
  • "Great to start the day with three doubles titles.  It is early in the fall and we still have lots to improve on with our doubles play but there is no substitute for wining."
  • "In singles, we played a lot of tough matches again today and had success as well as several losses.  We will learn from both and continue to work on getting better.  Overall a lot of fun to battle here and appreciate the hospitality Andres (Pedroso, UVA's director of tennis and head men's tennis coach) and his staff at UVA have extended to us here."

UP NEXT:
Ingildsen and Crawford will compete in the semifinals of the singles draw.  Still alive, both are competing for the wildcard entry into qualifying for the ATP 75k Charlottesville Challenger in October.  Crawford and Ingildsen's matches will begin at 9 a.m. ET.  Vale and Riffice will compete in the semifinals of the UVA Masters Singles Backdraw (rd. of 16 losers) at 9 a.m. ET and Kessler and Andrade were selected for an extra backdraw match scheduled for 10:30 a.m. ET.

Gamecock Fall Invitational:

Harrison Cacciatore and Greysen Cacciatore advanced to the main draw semifinals of Flight C doubles in Columbia.  The freshmen twins downed Georgia's Samuel Dromsky and Britton Johnston 9-8.  Harrison and Greysen were three-time USTA FL Doubles State Champions and 2016 National Doubles Championship finalists.

The twins also won their second round singles matches in the consolation brackets of both flight B and C, but lost in the third round.

  • "The day started with the Cacciatore twins wining a hard fought doubles match against the Georgia Bulldogs 9-8.  That advances them to the main draw semifinals of doubles tomorrow morning. Both Harry and Grey are learning and improving in their singles play and are looking forward to finishing the weekend on a positive note."
