GAINESVILLE, Fla. – Non-conference tilts against Florida State, TCU, Illinois and Wake Forest, a 12-match SEC slate and hosting the SEC Tournament in Gainesville highlight the Florida men's tennis 2018-19 schedule, as Coach Bryan Shelton announced on Friday.
Florida's fall season features numerous tournaments around the country, including the ITA All-American Championships in Tulsa, Okla., ITA Regionals in Athens, Ga. and the Oracle ITA National Fall Championships in Surprise, Ariz.
In the spring, Florida will begin with the annual ITA Kick-Off Weekend tournament Jan. 26-27 in Gainesville. The Gators will play host to Louisville, William and Mary and Florida Atlantic.
On Jan. 31, the Gators will head to Orlando for a contest with the University of Central Florida. The Gators will then meet Florida State for the third consecutive year in the Fresh From Florida Sunshine Showdown on Feb. 2 as part of the College Match Day Event held at the United State Tennis Association National Campus in Lake Nona, Fla. The event features a collection of the top collegiate teams in the country and provides a festive atmosphere to promote the collegiate game in the community and across the country.
The Gators non-conference schedule heats up Feb. 10 as they travel to Fort Worth, Texas to clash with TCU, a team that finished last year ranked in the north to clash with two teams that finished the year ranked in the ITA top 10. Florida will be on the road the following weekend when they will travel north to Chicago, Ill. to compete in the ITA National Team Indoors, Feb. 15-18 at the Midtown Athletic Club.
The SEC schedule begins on March 3 against Arkansas – the first of six league road matches at Georgia (March 15), at Tennessee (March 17), at Kentucky (March 23), at Alabama (April 5) and at Auburn (April 7). Florida's home conference slate includes contests against Ole Miss (March 8), Mississippi State (March 10), Vanderbilt (March 21), LSU (March 29), Texas A&M (March 31) and South Carolina (April 14).
The Gators will also squeeze in two non-conference home matches in the middle of their SEC schedule. Last year's national champions, Wake Forest, will travel to Gainesville for a March 13th contest. Last season, Florida traveled to Winston-Salem and upset the top-ranked Demon Deacons. The Gators will also welcome Illinois, a BIG 10 powerhouse and was ranked in the ITA top-10 at the end of last season.
Florida will host the SEC Tournament April 18-22 at the Alfred A. Ring Tennis Complex. The NCAA first and second rounds are set to take place on May 4-5 at various campus sites. This year also marks the first season of the new NCAA Super Regional format with the top eight seeds remaining after the first two rounds set to host Super Regional matches on May 11.
This year's NCAA Championship featuring the final eight teams will be played May 16-25 at the USTA National Campus in Lake Nona, Fla.
