Four UF players travel to premier national competition in California
PACIFIC PALISADES, Calif. – The University of Florida women's tennis team sends four players to California for competition at the prestigious Riviera/ITA All-American Championships held at the Riviera Tennis Club for the 34th consecutive year.
Junior Tsveta Dimitrova and sophomores Victoria Emma, Ida Jarlskog and McCartney Kessler will make the cross-country journey to compete for a shot at an All-American national title as well as an automatic selection to the 2018 Oracle ITA National Fall Championships.
The pre-qualifying round kicks off the event on Saturday, September 29, with the matches occurring at nearby Pepperdine University.
The qualifying rounds for both singles and doubles are set for October 2-3 with the main draw running from October 4-7. All qualifying matches and main draw events will take place at the Riviera Tennis Club.
Kessler and Jarlskog, who were tabbed the No. 5 seed in the pre-qualifying round, will be the first Gators to take the court when they compete in the pre-qualifiers on Saturday. Kessler/Jarlskog takes on Heimuli/Turley from the University of Utah at Noon ET. With a victory, the pair would battle the winner of the Decker/Linares (Kansas State) and Spasojevic/Perez Mur (Texas) matchup.
All four Gators are set to compete in the singles qualifying portion of the event and Dimitrova and Emma will represent UF in the qualifying doubles bracket.
Kessler, a First Team All-SEC performer a season ago, posted a strong performance in the team's fall season opener this past weekend at the Miami Fall Invite Draw. The Georgia native claimed a share of the Flight A singles title with a trio of match victories.
Dimitrova and Jarlskog, both transfers in their first season with the Gators, made their respective Florida debuts at Miami. Dimitrova is a native of Bulgaria who comes by way of the University of Houston while Jarlskog hails from Sweden and transferred in from Georgia Tech.
Emma, who competed in the 2018 NCAA Doubles Championship alongside departed senior Anna Danilina, paired up with Dimitrova to kick off the fall season. The duo closed the weekend out with two victories after dropping their opening match 7-6 at Miami.
