Gators in Second After First Round of Tavistock Collegiate

The Florida men’s golf team is in second place after shooting 3 under in the first round of the Tavistock Collegiate Invitational.

ORLANDO, Fla. – The Florida men's golf team fared well in the first round of the Tavistock Collegiate Invitational, shooting 3 under to sit in second place with 36 holes remaining.

The Gators are currently five strokes behind the current leader, UCF, and are also just one of four teams in the 15-team field to finish the day under par.

At the top of the Gators' lineup, John Axelsen was flawless. The junior carded four birdies throughout the round with no blemishes to finish at 4-under 68 and in a tie for third place. Axelsen is currently one shot off of the leaders, California's Finigan Tilly and UNLV's Jack Trent.

Freshmen Ricky Castillo and John DuBois both went into the clubhouse after the first day at even par and tied for 19th individually.

The third freshman in the Gators' lineup, Fred Biondi, rounded out Florida's counting scores with a 1-over 73 performance.

The second round of the event is set to begin tomorrow morning at 8 a.m. ET.

On the team's first-round performance...
"It was nice to get off to a good start at Isleworth. They guys were able to take all the good golf we have been playing at home in qualifying and have it translate on the road. We've been putting in the work and we got rewarded for it today."

Looking forward to the rest of the tournament…
"That being said, we have a long way to go. John Axelsen stepped up and played a monster round for us and I know the other guys are eager to follow his lead and get after it the next two days. We just have to continue to take care of our business and play smart golf with an aggressive mindset."
