GAINESVILLE, Fla. – After picking up three wins in Florida's dual victory over Florida State, Talia Bates was honored as the Southeastern Conference Women's Freshman of the Week as the league announced its weekly awards on Tuesday.
The freshman shined in the sprint events, touching the wall with the fastest times in the 50 and 100 free. Additionally, she was a member of the winning 200 free relay team and the third-place 400 medley relay.
Bates won the 50 free in a new personal-best swim of 22.88, .09 seconds faster than her previous best set against Missouri on Oct. 18. Later in the meet, she would win the 100 free with a swim of 50.09.
The Gainesville, Fla. native has recorded the top 50 (Florida State) and 100 free (Missouri) swims by a freshman in the SEC so far this year.
Bates led off the 200 free relay with a split of 23.06 as the team posted a combined swim of 1:30.82, beating the field by almost two full seconds.
In the 400 medley relay, she hit a split of 54.09, the second-fastest split on her relay.
Through the Gators' first seven duals this season, Bates has tallied nine individual event wins and eight relay victories.
Florida swimmers will be back in the pool for their first invitational of the season on Nov. 22-24 at the Georgia Tech Invitational.
The divers will wrap up competition for 2019 at the Auburn Diving Invitational on Dec. 17-19.
