LITTLE ROCK, Ark. – The Frank & Barbara Broyles Foundation announced the nominees for the 2019 Broyles Award, which honors college football's top assistant coaches, on Wednesday, as co-offensive coordinator and wide receivers coach Billy Gonzales has been recognized among 41 assistant coaches.
Gonzales has done a tremendous job developing and utilizing a number of wide receivers for the Gators this season, as the positional depth has allowed for eight different players to acquire 150-plus receiving yards in a season for the first time since 1992. Under Gonzales, Florida is one of only six FBS teams featuring at least four receivers with 375-plus yards, 25-plus receptions and at least three touchdowns.
The multiple receiver threat Florida possesses under Gonzales has seen an effect in Florida's big plays, as the Gators are one of five FBS teams with at least eight scrimmage plays of 60-plus yards - with the receiving corps being responsible for six of those eight plays. Additionally, UF also has seven 90-yard receiving games from five different Gators (Kyle Pitts, Freddie Swain, Trevon Grimes, Van Jefferson and Josh Hammond), marking their most 90-yard outings in a season since 2007.
The 41 nominees in this year's class were selected from approximately 1,500 assistant coaches representing 130 Division I programs across the country. The Broyles Award selection process includes the Football Writers Association of America (FWAA), broadcasters, a college football hall-of-fame selection committee and current college head coaches.
The No. 11 Florida Gators travel to Columbia, Mo. this Saturday, Nov. 16, for their final SEC East matchup with Missouri at noon on CBS.
