BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – The Southeastern Conference announced the Coaches' Freshman All-SEC Team on Wednesday, as freshman defensive back Kaiir Elam was named to the Freshman All-SEC Defensive Team by the league's coaches.
Elam brings down a Wildcat receiver in Florida's 29-21 win over Kentucky on Sat., Sept. 14.
Elam emerged as an immediate contributor among the Gators' defensive-back unit in his rookie campaign, appearing in all 12 games while notching four starts on the season (UT-Martin, Towson, Missouri, Florida State). The Riviera Beach, Fla. native ranks fourth on the team in tackles (9) among first-year Gators and fourth on the team overall in interceptions with two on the year.
Elam notched his first career interception in his first start as a Gator against UT-Martin (9/7), while going on to record his second career interception in consecutive games against Kentucky the following week (9/14). Additionally, he has recorded tackles in five games this season, highlighted by a career-high three-tackle performance against Towson (9/28), including two pass breakups.
Elam has been a solid contributor to a Florida defense that ranks among the top 10 nationally in opponent red zone percentage (2nd, 64.5%), scoring defense (8th, 14.4 points/game), interceptions (T-9th, 15) and total defense (10th, 299 yards/game).
The No. 9 Florida Gators return to action on Monday, Dec. 30, when they will face No. 24 Virginia in the Capital One Orange Bowl. Kickoff is set for 8 p.m. at Hard Rock Stadium in Miami Gardens, Fla. with ESPN televising the game.
