Nembhard Earns Freshman of the Week Honors for Second Time
Monday, February 18, 2019 | Men's Basketball
Gainesville, Fla. – Point guard Andrew Nembhard was named the SEC Co-Freshman of the Week, announced by the league office Monday. This is the second accolade for the freshman.
Nembhard, a 6-foot-5, 191-pound freshman from Aurora, Ontario, and Vanderbilt guard Aaron Nesmith, a 6-foot-6, 213-pound freshman from Charleston, S.C., were named SEC Co-Freshmen of the Week. Nembhard led the Gators against Alabama with a career-high 21 points and didn't miss a shot all day, going 9-for-9 from the field (2-for-2 from 3-point range) and 1-for-1 from the free throw line.
It marked the 4th time since 1996-97 that a Gator was perfect from the field with 9+ makes. All 3 previous occurrences came at home in non-conference play:
12, David Lee, 12/22/03 vs. Northeastern
10, Erik Murphy, 11/14/12 vs. Wisconsin
10, Joakim Noah, 1/18/06 vs. Savannah State.
Nembhard's perfect game from the field was the first all season by an SEC player with 9+ field goals. It was the first perfect game from the field (9+ makes) in conference play by an SEC player since Tennessee's Isiah Victor did so in a loss 1/23/99 at Florida.
He was also an efficient scorer in the win against Vanderbilt, putting up 9 points in only 16 minutes as he battled early foul trouble.
Nembhard is the first Gator since Michael Frazier II to win Freshman of the Week twice in a season in 2012-13.
The Gators are back in action Wednesday, February 20, in Baton Rouge where they face SEC opponent LSU. Tipoff is set for 7 p.m. ET and will air on ESPNU.
