Gators Rally to Even Series

WHAT HAPPENED: Florida scored nine runs over the final four innings to come from behind and beat Miami 9-3 on Saturday night to even the series in Gainesville.

The win ended a three-game losing streak for the Gators.

Miami's Raymond Gil connected in the sixth on a three-run home run to left field to give the Hurricanes the lead 3-0.

Florida responded immediately with a double by Austin Langworthy to right-center field, sparking much-needed momentum for the Gators. A groundout to first by Wil Dalton placed Langworthy in scoring position and a sac fly by Kendrick Calilao allowed Langworthy to score.

Miami entered the seventh inning looking to respond to Florida's first run of the night. In a contested top of the seventh, Florida proved its mettle, stranding two Miami runners to prevent further damage.

The momentum continued for Florida in the bottom half of the inning. With the bases loaded, Wil Dalton connected with a three-run triple to right-center field, bringing in Langworthy, Brady McConnell and Brady Smith to give the Gators their first lead of the series. A batter later, Calilao recorded a RBI double that brought in Dalton to increase the Gators lead 5-3.

In the eighth, a two-run single by McConnell, followed by a wild pitch, expanded the Gators lead to 8-3. A single RBI by Calilao – his third RBI of the night – scored Langworthy and secured the victory for the Gators.

Tommy Mace went seven notable innings during his second start of the season. He allowed only five hits and three runs while striking out four. Freshman Nolan Crisp relieved Mace for the final two innings and record his third save. Crisp allowed only one hit, no walks and no runs.

IN THE SPOTLIGHT:  Second in a Row – Tommy Mace has gone seven innings in each of his first two starts of the season. Mace is the first Gators' pitcher to do so since 2006 when Bryan Augenstein pitched eight innings against Cincinnati and seven against Miami.

FROM THE COACH: Head Coach Kevin O'Sullivan – On Tommy Mace's Performance: "I thought Tommy was outstanding tonight. He really was. Other than that one mistake, he pitched efficiently, he was really good." -- On the team's performance: -- "We needed to play with more intensity, and I think this was the first game that we played with a little bit of fire and intent, you know. We were in the game—it could have been easy for us to hang our head after falling down three runs … it was good to see to kind of have some intensity and some fight."

FROM THE PLAYERS: Junior Wil Dalton – On his three-run triple: "Well, it's kind of funny. I got chills walking to the plate because I told some of the guys that they were going to load the bases. Someway, somehow the bases are going to be loaded here and I'm splitting the game wide open. Something, someway, somehow, I said: 'I'm scoring runs.' I basically just put my pride on the line and said 'hey this is what I've got, and I gave it all for those guys. It's been a rough past week. … So, I just honored the name in front of my jersey and went after it."

STANDOUT STAT: New Season Highs -- The Gators set new season-highs with 11 hits and nine runs. Pitching – Tommy Mace went seven innings, allowing only five hits and three runs while striking out four. He now improves to 2-0 for the year. Freshman Nolan Crisp recorded his third career save over two innings pitched allowing only one hit, no runs and no walks while striking out two. Attendance – Saturday's attendance of 6,206 is the third-largest in school history.
