Holloway Remains on The Bowerman Watch List
Thursday, February 7, 2019 | Track and Field
NEW ORLEANS – Florida junior Grant Holloway made his 10th consecutive appearance on The Bowerman Men's Watch List, as the U.S Track and Field and Cross Country Coaches Association released the mid-indoor season list for collegiate track and field's highest individual honor.
Holloway's streak of appearances dates back to 2018's preseason listing, and does not include his being a semifinalist and finalist last year.
The Chesapeake, Va., native's 2019 campaign is off to an incredible start, with Holloway being the only man ranked in the world top five in three different events. Holloway is the world leader in both the 60 meters (6.51 seconds) and 60-meter hurdles (7.49 seconds, twice), in addition to ranking fifth worldwide in the long jump (8.02 meters / 26 feet, 3.75 inches).
As if it were not impressive enough, Holloway broke Jeff Demps' seven-year-old school record of 6.52 seconds in the 60 meters two weeks ago, also tying the No. 9 performer in collegiate history. Holloway had never run the event before (the closest thing to it was the 55 meters in high school), while Demps was a three-time national champion in the 60 from 2010-12.
Holloway also ranks sixth nationally in the 200 meters (20.69 seconds), another he never ran as a collegian prior to January, and is a key cog in Florida's No. 3-ranked 4x400 relay team.
Historical Perspective
According to athlete bios maintained by the IAAF, Holloway is the only man in indoor track and field history to break 7.50 seconds in the 60 hurdles, 21 seconds in the 200 meters, and 8.00 meters in the long jump—all marks which Holloway posted in the span of a week.
Of the 80 men in history to run 6.51 or faster in the 60 meters, according to the all-time list and athlete bios maintained by the IAAF, only Holloway, Leroy Burrell, and Dwight Phillips also long jumped over 8.00 meters.
One major difference: Burrell did not reach both marks until he was 25 years old, and Phillips did not reach both until he was 27. Holloway turned 21 this past November and hit both in less than 21 hours.
Burrell went on to hold the 100 meters world record and won 1992 Olympic gold, along with World Championships gold medals in 1991 and 1993 with the United States' 4x100 relay team. Phillips won 2004 Olympic gold and four World Championships gold medals in the long jump.
Finally, Holloway's two runs of 7.49 seconds in the 60 hurdles tied the fifth-fastest time in collegiate history. Of the 10 fastest 60 hurdles times in collegiate history, Holloway owns five of them, including the collegiate record of 7.42 seconds.
