GAINESVILLE, Fla. — Three current Florida players announced this week they were transferring from the program, but UF fans who tuned into ESPN2 Wednesday night got a brief glimpse at a couple incoming Gators who figure to make an instant impact.
Forward Scottie Lewis scored 10 points and guard Tre Mann had five points during the 2019 McDonald's All-America Game in Atlanta, where Lewis and his East teammates defeated Mann and the West, 115-100, at State Farm Arena.
Lewis, the 6-foot-6 swingman who wowed the crowd in the slam-dunk competition Monday, went 4-for-7 from the floor to go with two rebounds, two assists, four steals and a couple turnovers in 19 minutes.
An elite defender with a long wingspan, Lewis' highlight came in the third quarter when he got into a stance and faced up against Bryan Antoine, his heralded teammate from Rainey School in Tinton Falls, N.J., bound for Villanova. Lewis reached with his left hand, picked Antoine's pocket and sped to the other end for a run-out slam (finished off with a primal scream).
Mann, a combo guard from Gainesville by way of The Villages, got all five of his points in the final 3:48 of the game, including an NBA-range 3-pointer with just over a minute left. He also had long three rebounds. Mann went 2-for-7 from the floor in 16 minutes.
The duo represented the first UF-bound signees to play in the prestigious all-star game since Kasey Hill and Chris Walker in 2013. Lewis began the day ranked No. 12 in the ESPN Top 100, with Mann at No. 32. Along with 6-9 power forward Omar Payne, out of Montverde Academy (Fla.), the UF incoming freshman class is ranked among the nation's top five.
And the Gators' recruiting is not done. Far from it, actually.
On Monday, fourth-year junior forward Keith Stone and sophomore guard Mike Okauru announced they were transferring. On Tuesday, sophomore guard Deaundrae Ballard did the same. Along with the midseason transfer of sophomore forward Chase Johnson to Dayton, the Gators have four vacant scholarships to work with. Mike White and his staff will look at unsigned high school players, transfer and grad-transfer candidates to fill out the roster, a process that could yield results very soon.
