Marlee Zein earns second Freshman of the Week accolade after 2-0 week and top 50 win. \
GAINESVILLE, Fla. – After posting an undefeated week with two singles wins and a doubles victory, University of Florida women's tennis freshman Marlee Zein has been named the SEC Freshman of the Week, the league announced Wednesday afternoon.
Zein earned her first top 50 ITA win when she defeated No. 45 Chiara Lommer of No. 14 Michigan this past Thursday. The rookie had her fingerprints all over UF's victory over the nationally-ranked Wolverines as she recorded both a singles and a doubles victory. Zein's doubles win helped the Gators secure a crucial doubles point and her singles victory paved the way for the Gators' eventual comeback after they trailed 3-1.
Against No. 5 South Carolina on Saturday, Zein continued her winning ways, earning a 6-1, 4-6, 6-2 victory over Megan Davies at No. 4. Her doubles match went unfinished at 5-5 against the Gamecocks but Zein and her partner Sydney Berlin have recorded three wins in their past four matches.
With 10 victories, Zein is just one of two Florida players to reach double-digit regular season wins. She has recorded an 8-4 mark playing at the No. 4 position.
No. 7 seed Florida returns to the courts this Thursday, April 18 when it battles No. 10 Ole Miss in the second round of the SEC Women's Tennis Tournament. The Gators and Rebels are set to square off at 11 a.m. at the Mitchell Tennis Center on the campus of Texas A&M.
