Marlee Zein named SEC Freshman of the Week after helping guide Gators to 2-0 weekend.
GAINESVILLE, Fla. – After an impressive performance over the weekend in the Gators' wins at No. 23 LSU and No. 12 Texas A&M, University of Florida women's tennis freshman Marlee Zein has been named the SEC Freshman of the Week, the league announced Wednesday afternoon.
Zein played a pivotal role in the Gators' back-to-back top 25 road wins, notching two singles victories, including the match clincher at No. 23 LSU, and a doubles win over No. 67 McQuaid/Quiterio of No. 12 Texas A&M.
Zein, who has won three straight matches, battled to a tough three-set win over Paris Corley of LSU from court four on Friday, propelling Florida to its first top 25 victory this season. Zein then carried her momentum into Sunday's bout with Texas A&M as she teamed up with fellow freshman Sydney Berlin to pick up a win over a ranked Texas A&M duo, securing the valuable doubles point for Florida. Playing in another gritty three-set match in singles, Zein came out on top against the Aggies' Renee McBryde and put the Gators ahead 3-2 late in the match.
The Sugar Land, Texas native ranks second on the team with eight wins in singles, trailing just No. 8 Ida Jarlskog's 11.
Florida returns to the courts this weekend when it hosts No. 43 Alabama Friday and No. 49 Auburn Sunday at the Alfred A. Ring Tennis Complex.
