Gators Fall in Extras at SEC Tournament

WHAT HAPPENED: Game one of the SEC Tournament was a back-and-forth affair, as Texas A&M defeated Florida 8-7 in 10 innings in Hoover.

The Gators twice battled back to tie the game, even taking a 5-3 lead in the eighth inning, but a walk-off single from Ducoff in the bottom of the 10th inning advanced the Aggies to the next round.

Texas A&M got on the board first, leading off the third inning with back-to-back singles to start a rally. After a sacrifice bunt moved both runners into scoring position, then a sac fly and single made it 2-0.

A wild pitch and errant throw from Brady Smith allowed a third run to score in the inning before Tommy Mace escaped the jam.

Florida responded with a pair of runs in the fifth inning to cut the lead to one. With the bases loaded and two out, Brady McConnell lined the first pitch to left field to bring in two runs.

Texas A&M starter Asa Lacy lost his control in the sixth inning and loaded the bases without Florida notching a hit.

Jacob Young drew a bases-loaded walk and Brady Smith walked home from third to tie the game 3-3.

Mace settled in after the rough third inning and allowed just one hit over his final four innings, giving way to Christian Scott after a two-out double in the bottom of the seventh. Scott got a flyout to end the seventh, keeping the game tied at three.

Florida took its first lead of the day in the eighth inning on a RBI triple from Wil Dalton. Kendrick Calilao followed with a sac fly to put the Gators ahead 5-3.

In the bottom of the eighth, UF's season-long problem of giving up rebound runs hurt them again. The Aggies put together a two-out rally, started by a solo home run from Mikey Hoehner.

Back-to-back singles led to a key at bat by Ducaff, who won a 10-pitch battle with Gators' reliever Jordan Butler and connected on a three-run home run to give Texas A&M a 7-5 lead.

Florida continued to battle, tying the game again in the ninth inning. Jud Fabian led off with a double then scored on Austin Langworthy's triple to right center.

Nelson Maldonado tied the game with a RBI single to center.

In the bottom of the 10th, Nolan Crisp kept the Aggies off the board to send the game to extra innings.

Florida did not manage a hit off Aggies' closer Kasey Kalich in the top of the 10th inning, and Ducoff played hero again with a walk-off single to win the game.

FROM THE COACH: Head Coach Kevin O'Sullivan – On today's game: "They were just a little bit better than us today, we made a couple mistakes. Credit our hitters, they battled against some of the best pitching in our league today. Our young hitters had some really good at bats. We battled from behind twice, down 3-0 early and battled back into it. Tommy gave us a great start. A play here, a play there, a pitch here or a pitch there, obviously it's a different outcome. Credit Texas A&M, they played just a little bit better than us today."

On the team's performance last two weeks: "I'm proud of the way we battled. Obviously a lot of people probably didn't expect us to be in this position 10 days ago. But I've seen steady progress and improvement of our team, but today kind of shows you a little of what we've gone through the entire year. We battle, and battle, and battle and had a great start from our starter. We just weren't able to finish it off. Given the difference in the circumstances, with some time off, I like our club. That's for the committee to decide, I'm not going to put my two cents in there. You've got some smart people making these decisions and at the end of the day I like our team. Simple as that."

UP NEXT: With the loss, Florida is eliminated from the SEC Tournament. The Gators will return to Gainesville to await the 2019 NCAA Selection Show (Monday, 12 pm, ESPNU).
