Canyon Barry has been selected to compete for USA Basketball at the 2019 FIBA Men's 3x3 World Cup in Amsterdam from June 18-23. The 2017 SEC Sixth Man of the Year will be making his first appearance in international play for USA Basketball, and he becomes the first Gator to compete in 3x3 international play.
Barry joins Robbie Hummel (Purdue, 2011), Kareem Maddox (Princeton, 2011) and Briante Weber (VCU, 2015) on the team, which will be searching for the USA's first gold medal in the event. His first experience in 3x3 action came at this year's Red Bull USA Basketball 3X Nationals. He appeared in 42 games during the 2018-19 season with the G League's Iowa Wolves, averaging 10.1 points with 24 starts.
Barry completed his Master's degree in nuclear engineering this spring.
"It's an honor to be able to represent my country and play for the USA in the 3x3 World Cup," said Barry. "I'm really excited to play with Robbie and Kareem, I know Briante and I have a lot to learn from them, since they're kind of seasoned vets. We're going to do our best to help the U.S. try to qualify for Tokyo in 2020.
"I remember spending a lot of time as little kid running around the USA gyms," added Barry, whose mother, Lynn, worked for USA Basketball from 1985-1996. "And I was able to try out for the U19 team back [in 2013] when I was a freshman in college. So, it feels great to still be a part of the USA Basketball family and be able to represent my country."
The USA will be one of 20 nations competing in the 3x3 World Cup. The team opens play on June 19 against four-time defending champion Serbia and Turkey, followed by games against South Korea and Netherlands on June 21. The top two teams from the pool will advance out of pool play and into the quarterfinals.
