WHAT HAPPENED: Senior Kelly Barnhill was given an early lead and UF's ace in the circle did the rest in mowing through the Lady Vols on the way to a three-hit complete game shutout in Friday's best-of-three series NCAA Super Region opener at Pressly Stadium. The fifth-seeded Gators' two best hitters, Amanda Lorenz and Kendyl Lindaman, opened the game with a four-pitch walk and run-scoring double, respectively, off UT starter Ashley Rogers, who only lasted one inning. Lorenz walked on four pitches and Lindaman lashed her two-bagger into left-center, where centerfielder Cailin Hannon misjudged the ball that sailed over her out-stretched glove, went to the wall and allowed Lorenz to circle home from first. Four batters later, Sophia Reynoso dropped a two-out single to left that scored Lindaman and allowed Barnhill to pitch from ahead. UF, winner of nine straight, added another run in the fourth after a single by Jordan Roberts and RBI-double from Jaimie Hoover for a cozy three-run cushion. Meanwhile, whatever the No. 12-seed Lady Vols could manage the rest of the way, including a bases-loaded threat with two out in the third, Barnhill worked through on the way striking out seven, walking three and not allowing a hit over the final four innings in posting her 27th complete game of the season.
IN THE SPOTLIGHT: Take a wild guess (or read on).
STAGGERING STATISTIC: UF has played eight postseason games, dating to the SEC Tournament two weeks ago. Barnhill (33-11) has pitched in seven of them, going 6-0, allowing just one run and 13 hits, while striking out 44 and walking 14. Her ERA in those seven games -- get this -- is a ridiculous 0.16.
UP NEXT: Florida (48-15) and Tennessee (42-16) will square off in Game 2 Saturday night at 6 p.m. A rubber game in the series, if necessary, is scheduled for Sunday at 2 p.m.
