FIRST ROUND
OKLAHOMA STATE 2, FLORIDA 1
WHAT HAPPENED: OSU's Samantha Show did it all, hitting a pair of solo home runs and limiting the Gators to just six hits from the circle to carry the 13th-seeded Cowgirls to victory over the No. 5-seed Gators in opening-round Women's College World Series play Thursday night at USA Softball Hall of Fame Stadium in Oklahoma City. Show hit a solo homer in the first and the go-ahead -- and game-winning, as it turned out -- blast in the sixth to out-duel UF senior ace Kelly Barnhill, who was otherwise terrific in surrendering just two hits. They were big hits, obviously. Show launched her first home run on the second at-bat of the game, putting the Gators behind 1-0 early. Catcher Jordan Roberts tied the game with a solo homer to right-center with one out in the second. For the Gators, though, that was it, including in a seventh inning when they got two hits, had runners at first and second with nobody out, and could not push the tying run across. They finished with just six hits on the game, two each by senior Amanda Lorenz and Roberts, and at one point from the third through the sixth inning had 12 of 13 batters retired. Shaw broke the tie in the OSU sixth, with a towering blast that ended several rows deep in the left-center field bleachers. Show (22-8), the Texas A&M transfer who posted her 31st complete game of the season, allowed just the one run, scattered the six hits (three UF leadoff runners reached, but none failed to score and only one advanced beyond second), struck out two and did not walk a batter. Barnhill (35-12), with her 30th complete game, gave up to the two homers, struck out nine, walked only one and hit a batter.
IN THE SPOTLIGHT: Show, simply put, was The Show. The homers were her 19th and 20th of the season and she improved her average to .344.
STAGGERING STATISTIC: Florida had three times as many hits as Oklahoma State, but the Gators' six hits accounted for seven total bases while Show's two accounted for eight.
UP NEXT: Florida (49-17) will have Friday off and be back on the field Saturday -- for loser's bracket day against either No. 1-seed Oklahoma (54-3) or No. 8-seed Alabama (57-8) -- when the field will be winnowed in half with four elimination games.
