Nembhard Earns Team Canada Roster Spot for FIBA Basketball World Cup
Friday, August 30, 2019 | Men's Basketball
Florida sophomore point guard Andrew Nembhard has earned a place on Canada's FIBA Basketball World Cup 2019 roster, Canada Basketball announced on Friday.
Nembhard, a native of Aurora, Ontario, will play for his home country in FIBA's premier event, which takes place August 31-Sept. 15 in China. He appeared previously for Canada's senior national team in a pair of World Cup qualifiers last summer after leading the U18 team to a silver medal at the FIBA Americas.
After starting every game as a freshman for the Gators, Nembhard will now become the third Gator to participate in the FIBA Basketball World Cup this decade, joining Nick Calathes (Greece, 2010 and 2014) and Erik Murphy (Finland, 2014). Nembhard is the only one of the group to do so while active in his Florida career.
The FIBA Basketball World Cup will qualify seven teams directly for the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games. Canada begins group play on Sept. 1 vs. Australia (3:30 a.m. Eastern), followed by contests vs. Lithuania (Sept. 3, 7:30 a.m.) and Senegal (Sept 5, 3:30 a.m.). The team is coached by Toronto Raptors head coach Nick Nurse.
