GAINESVILLE, Fla. – Graduate defensive lineman Jonathan Greenard was named SEC Defensive Lineman of the Week, as announced by the Southeastern Conference on Monday.
The weekly honor is the first for Greenard as a Gator after a strong defensive performance in Florida's 24-20 win over Miami.
The Hiram, Ga. native recorded 1.5 sacks for a loss of four yards and six tackles, including two for a loss of five yards, in his Gators debut last Saturday, Aug. 24. Greenard was part of a defensive group that forced 10 sacks against Miami. Florida's 10 sacks eclipsed its highest single-game total since 1996, with the previous high being its nine against Auburn on Oct. 18, 1997.
Greenard also played a key role in a Gators defense that held Miami to 2-of-13 (15.4%) on third downs. The only opponent Florida held under 16 percent on third down last season was Florida State (1-of-14).
The Gators are back in action for their home opener this Saturday, Sept. 7, hosting UT Martin in Ben Hill Griffin Stadium at 7:30 p.m. on ESPNU.
