Tuesday, September 24, 2019 | Softball
GAINESVILLE, Fla. – Five Gators are currently preparing for the 2020 USA Softball Women's National Team (WNT) Olympic Selection Trails, which is set to take place Oct. 2-6, 2019 at the USA Softball Hall of Fame Complex.
In 2016, it was announced that softball would make its return for the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games. Since the announcement players around the country have prepared for the opportunity to make the first USA Olympic softball team since the 2008 Beijing Olympics.
Among those vying for a spot on the 15-player Olympic roster are former Gators Michelle Moultrie (2009-2012), Aubree Munro (2013-2016), Kirsti Merritt (2013-2016), Kelsey Stewart (2013-2016) and Amanda Lorenz (2016-2019). The group will make up a field of 29 players who accepted the invitation from USA Softball to the National Team Selection Trials.
This past summer Moultrie, Munro, Merritt and Stewart competed for the Red, White and Blue and helped lead the team to gold medals at the Pan American Games, the Japan Cup and the USA Softball International Cup. The core group of Gators from last year's Team USA squad will look to rely on their combined 21 years of experience, Moultrie being the longest tenured with nine-straight years, to earn a spot on the coveted Olympic roster.
During the selection process, athletes will participate in position drills as well as simulated games and be evaluated by the USA Softball Women's National Team Selection Committee (WNTSC) in accordance with the Athlete Selection Procedures approved by the United States Olympic & Paralympic Committee (USOPC). Those Selection Procedures are available for viewing at USASoftball.com.
In addition, USA Softball has opened select sessions of the National Team Selection Trials to the public with free admission.
The final roster for the 2020 USA Softball WNT will be announced at the conclusion of the Selection Trials and press conference featuring the 2020 roster is set for Oct. 8.
