UAA and UF Health Join Forces Through Gatorade
Friday, March 27, 2020 | General
GAINESVILLE, Fla. – In conjunction with the groundbreaking large-scale testing of COVID-19 being conducted at The Villages® community, UF Health was seeking donated materials to supplement their efforts. That is where the University of Florida athletic department stepped in.
With the idle Gatorade in storage at their respective athletic facilities, UF athletic director Scott Stricklin teamed up with Dr. Michael Lauzardo and UF Health. The directive came to not only help the local community with the shortage of the electrolyte-rich product but also get the Gatorade in the hands of the medical professionals that are fighting the Florida heat in full protective gear to implement the groundbreaking tests.
"We appreciate Scott Stricklin and the efforts of the UF athletic department," Dr. Lauzardo, M.D., deputy director of UF Emerging Pathogens Institute, said. "The collaboration of the entire University and surrounding communities have made a positive impact during these challenging times."
Due to the cancellation of spring sports for all UF teams, a surplus of Gatorade was readily available. Ironic, a product incubated on the UF campus in the College of Medicine is now at the forefront of aiding the fight against the virus.
"We have a tremendous partner in UF Health and to be able to help them and our community in any way during this difficult time was paramount," Stricklin said. "We applaud the tireless efforts by our health and emergency management officials."
