Tuesday, October 19, 2021 | Baseball
Florida's 2021 Meet the Gators series continues this week with freshman catcher Rene Lastres out of Calvary Christian Academy in Hialeah Gardens, Fla. As one of the top incoming catchers in the country, Lastres will wear No. 16 for the Gators this season.
Recently ranked as the No. 1 recruiting class in the country by Perfect Game, Florida's 2021 incoming class features 16 freshmen and one four-year college transfer. Individually, Lastres ranked as the No. 31 overall recruit and No. 4 catcher in the nation on top of being the No. 5 player and top catcher in Florida.
Playing under head coach Gil Morales at Calvary Christian, Lastres was a five-time letterwinner and earned Perfect Game/Under Armour All-America honors on four-separate occasions. During his junior season, he batted .367/.441/.466 with a .986 fielding percentage defensively.
Lastres experienced a power surge as a senior in 2021, slashing .311/.483/.800 with seven home runs in just 45 at bats. That stat line translated to a gaudy 1.283 on-base plus slugging and featured one double, 15 RBI, 12 runs and 14 walks. Behind the plate, Lastres produced a .995 fielding percentage, making just one error across 186 defensive chances. As a result, Lastres was named a 2021 Second Team All-American and to the 3A-13 All-District Team.
In addition to his contributions on the diamond for Calvary Christian, Lastres also competed for Canes National during his prep years.
As the son of Rene Lastres and Anay Jover, he has two sisters, Clauda and Anamaria. Lastres intends to major in sport management at the University of Florida.
