Meet the Gators: Philip Abner
Wednesday, November 10, 2021 | Baseball
Florida's 2021 Meet the Gators series resumes this week with left-handed pitcher Philip Abner out of Charlotte Christian School in Charlotte, N.C. As he prepares for year one in Orange & Blue, Abner will wear No. 55 for the Gators.
Recently ranked as the No. 1 recruiting class in the country by Perfect Game, Florida's 2021 incoming class features 16 freshmen and one four-year college transfer. Individually, Abner was ranked as the No. 67 overall player nationally while being tabbed as the No. 3 player in North Carolina.
Abner earned four varsity letters in baseball under head coach Greg Simmons at Charlotte Christian, culminating with a state championship and a 27-6 record as the team captain his senior year. From 2018-2020, Abner collected all-state honors every season and was named all-conference in both 2018 and 2019. In the former of those two years, the southpaw was voted the Charlotte Player of the Year.
In his 2021 senior campaign, Abner pitched to a 0.70 ERA and 0.85 WHIP while holding opposing hitters to a .167 batting average. That impressive stat line was accompanied by 40 strikeouts in 20 innings of work, translating to 18.0 strikeouts per nine innings. His control was also exceptional, as he walked only five total batters all year. Further bolstering his performance, three of his outings came against eventual state championship teams.
Also a member of the USA Baseball family, Abner was part of the 16U and 17U National Team Development Program and was selected to the 18U Prospect Development Pipeline as a top-80 junior in the country. He also competed for Canes National from 2019-20.
As the son of Kenny and Anne Abner, Philip has two sisters (Mary Kate and Lydia) and two brothers (Jacob and David).
