Carter's Corner: Gasparilla Bowl Sells Out, Napier Interview, Richardson Update, More Gators Tidbits
Sunday, December 12, 2021 | Football, Scott Carter
GAINESVILLE, Fla. — The matchup between the Gators and UCF in 11 days is drawing more attention than usual for a bowl game not part of the College Football Playoff.
The Dec. 23 Union Home Mortgage Gasparilla Bowl in Tampa is on the radar of media and fans.
The sold-out game at Raymond James Stadium matches Florida (6-6) and UCF (8-4) ahead of their upcoming three-game series set to start in 2024. The Gators returned to practice Friday to start preparing for the game, and the Knights took the field on Saturday.
"We have a lot of respect for them,'' UCF coach Gus Malzhahn told the Orlando Sentinel. "I think it's good for the state too. There's a lot of excitement and I think you can see that with the sellout."
As the Gators returned to practice under interim head coach Greg Knox, new Florida coach Billy Napier was wrapping his first week on the job. That's the nature of a transitional phase.
There are a lot of comings and goings, and a game coming up. Here are some of the latest developments for the Gators:
-- Napier appeared on "The Paul Finebaum Show" Friday afternoon to discuss his move to Florida and his first few days as UF's head coach ...
-- Fifth-year senior defensive lineman Zachary Carter announced he has opted out of the Gasparilla Bowl to start preparing for the NFL Draft ...
-- Starting receiver Jacob Copeland has entered the transfer portal writes Thomas Goldkamp of Swamp247.com.
-- Another starter, linebacker Mohamoud Diabate, has entered his name into the transfer portal writes Demetrius Harvey of SI.com.
-- On a Tampa radio appearance, Knox updated the status of injured quarterback Anthony Richardson, who is not expected to play in the Gasparilla Bowl writes Graham Hall of the Gainesville Sun ...
-- New Gators assistant coach and ace recruiter Corey Raymond announced his arrival at "The Swamp" on Saturday night ...
-- Former Gators reserve offensive lineman Gerald Mincey, who recently entered the transfer portal, announced via social media his next stop ...
