Meet the Gators: Sam Sloan
Tuesday, December 28, 2021 | Baseball
As the Gators look ahead to 2022, the Meet the Gators series hits the home stretch with right-handed pitcher Sam Sloan from Bartow, Fla. Following a standout career at Lakeland Senior High School, Sloan will wear No. 21 for the Orange & Blue.
Recently ranked as the No. 1 recruiting class in the country by Perfect Game, Florida's 2021 incoming class features 16 freshmen and one four-year college transfer. In a class filled with top-500 prospects, Sloan came to the Gators as the No. 327 player nationally on top of being the No. 48 player and No. 17 right-handed pitcher in the state.
Holding status as a multi-sport athlete at Lakeland, Sloan collected four varsity letters in baseball under head coach Len Brutcher in addition to a pair of letters in football. He earned mention on Perfect Game's Preseason All-America lists on four separate occasions, culminating with All-Region First Team honors in 2021 after collecting a second-team nod one year prior.
Across 79.2 innings from 2019-21, Sloan pitched to a 9-6 record with a 3.08 ERA and 109 strikeouts. The all-country performer produced a lofty 12.3 strikeouts per nine innings and an impressive 7.1 hits allowed per nine in that span. Opposing hitters batted just .211 against Sloan during his sophomore-through-senior years – a mark that sat a .095 during the COVID-shortened 2020 campaign.
Sloan also competed for Elite Squad Baseball from 2017-20, where he was tabbed to seven different all-tournament teams. In 2020, he was named to the Perfect Game National Showcase Top Prospect Team.
As the son of Julie and Philip Sloan, Sam has one older brother, PJ. His father played baseball at the collegiate level at Santa Fe College. He intends to major in sport management at the University of Florida.

Fast start for Sam Sloan ('21) with 3ks in the first for @LHSBaseball8. Broad-shouldered build, holding upper-80s from a tough slot. Fading CH @ 81-84 & short biting SL @ 76-79; full arsenal for S/M. Florida commit. #PGHS pic.twitter.com/fbkN6XC4oF
