Gator Gymnastics Team Named to SEC Gymnastics Community Service Team
Friday, March 19, 2021 | Gymnastics
The Gators’ focused their efforts on promoting racial equality, Pride in the LGBT community, and support for breast cancer awareness.
GAINESVILLE, Fla. – The entire Gators gymnastics team has been named to the 2021 Southeastern Conference Community Service Team for their efforts in bringing awareness to social justice issues.
The Gators gymnastics team participated in a peaceful Black Lives Matter march that was held in Gainesville, Fla. in August 2020. The march was open to the public, but with promotion by UF's Black Student-Athlete Council (BSAC) included many UF athletes and coaches from every sport.

The BSAC coordinated with the Student-Athlete Advisory Committee for a Townhall Zoom meeting. Gator seniors Megan Skaggs (chairwoman) and Alyssa Baumann (vice-president) are part of the SAAC Executive Board.
Gator gymnastics brought a theme of social justice and unity into the 2021 season and their rainbow masks and temporary tattoos for the Jan. 29 Missouri meet pointed toward Pride in that social justice message. After Savannah Schoenherr announced that she was gay in the summer of 2020, the Gator gymnasts were proud to support their teammate. Both Schoenherr and fellow junior Nya Reed are on the Gator Athletics Pride Committee.
Temporary tattoos were prominent in the Gators' show of support for social equality, as they have allowed their meet attire to hold messages of equality and Black History.
The team was especially vocal on their various social media platforms leading up to the 2020 Presidential Election, encouraging others to register to vote and show up at the polls as a part of the #GatorsVote initiative.

Despite the changes that COVID-19 has brought over the last year, the Gator Gymnasts were able to host their 23rd Annual Harvest Food Drive, which supports food banks in the Gainesville community. 2020 participants were able to make their contributions in a drive-thru style.
The pandemic increases food bank demands.

The Gator team also showed their support for breast cancer awareness by hosting their 15th annual Link to Pink Meet.
To round out their winter service, the Gator gymnasts assisted in a community clean-up to celebrate Martin Luther King Jr's legacy on the MLK Day of Service. Some also participated in reading books to children to share online.
