Tebow Officially Joins Meyer With Jaguars

GAINESVILLE, Fla. -- The Tim Tebow era in Jacksonville has officially launched.
The Jaguars announced Thursday they have signed Tebow to a one-year contract. Tebow signed as a tight end and in his first day of workouts, he wore No. 85. The move reunites Tebow with Urban Meyer, who is in his first season as Jacksonville's head coach and was Tebow's coach at Florida from 2006-09.
The 33-year-old Tebow's signing was anticipated since reports surfaced earlier this month that he had worked out for Jacksonville as a tight end.
"I want to thank the Jaguars for the opportunity to compete and earn the chance to be part of this team," Tebow said in a statement. "I know it will be a challenge, but it is a challenge I embrace. I am dedicated to taking the direction of our coaching staff and learning from my teammates. I appreciate everyone's support as I embark on this new journey."
Not long after the signing was announced, TV cameras from Jacksonville stations recorded footage of Tebow in his new uniform and talking to some of his new teammates.
Jacksonville's signing of Tebow is the latest chapter in the former Gators quarterback's athletic journey. He was one of the nation's top recruits coming out of Nease High in Jacksonville and signed with the Gators over Alabama. He helped Florida win the program's second national title as a freshman in 2006, became the first sophomore to win a Heisman Trophy in 2007, led the Gators to another national title in 2008 and helped the Gators to a 12-0 regular season as a senior. In his final game for the Gators, Tebow passed for a school-record 482 yards in a Sugar Bowl win over Cincinnati.
Tebow has not been on an NFL roster since 2015, when he failed to make the Philadelphia Eagles' final 53-man for the regular season. He spent time with the Broncos, Patriots and Jets early in his career, his most notable performance a playoff victory over Pittsburgh when he was with the Broncos in 2011. After his brief stint with the Eagles, he embarked on a professional baseball career in the Mets' farm system, climbing as high as Triple-A. He retired from baseball earlier this year and hopes a change of position and a reunion with Meyer gives him a final shot at the NFL.
Besides his athletic endeavors, Tebow has remained a public figure since leaving the Gators as one of the greatest college football players in history.
He remains active in the Tim Tebow Foundation and works as a college football analyst on ESPN and the SEC Network.
Tebow remains a beloved figure in Gator Nation and was inducted into the program's Ring of Honor in 2018. Statues of Tebow and fellow Gators Heisman Trophy winners Steve Spurrier and Danny Wuerffel were unveiled outside Ben Hill Griffin Stadium at the Orange & Blue Game in April 2011.
Tebow turns 34 in August and has a short window to find NFL success in Jacksonville. Still, that won't keep him from trying as he tries to impress Meyer again at practice like their days together at Florida.
