Eight Gators will compete across six different summer developmental leagues this offseason, ranging from the USA Baseball Collegiate National Team to the Cape Cod League.
GAINESVILLE, Fla. – With the team's focus shifting from the 2021 campaign to the ensuing offseason, the Florida baseball program has announced its list of upcoming summer league assignments.
Nine Gators will compete across six different developmental summer leagues, ranging from the Cape Cod League to participation with the USA Baseball Collegiate National Team.
Having previously been selected to represent Team USA on the Collegiate National Team, left-handed pitcher Hunter Barco and right-handed pitcher Brandon Sproat are scheduled to spend the first half of July partaking in a slate of 11 intrasquad games between two 24-man Team USA rosters dubbed the Stars and Stripes. The Stars and Stripes will play 10 of their 11 games in the cities of the Appalachian League, which begins its first season as a summer collegiate league as a part of the Prospect Development Pipeline.
Regarded as the premier developmental summer baseball league in the nation, the Cape Cod League welcomes left-handed pitcher Timmy Manning (Harwich Mariners) and infielder Josh Rivera (Chatham Anglers) to Massachusetts this offseason. Although the 2021 CCL season only recently began on June 20, Rivera started each of the first two games of the campaign for Chatham and owns a .250/.333/.583 batting line with two runs scored.
Additionally, 2021 SEC All-Freshman Team outfielder Sterlin Thompson is competing for the Winter Park Diamond Dawgs of the Florida Collegiate Summer League. Thompson debuted for Winter Park on June 21, making two plate appearances and drawing one walk. The rising Gator sophomore will be joined in the FCSL by fellow Florida outfielder Tucker Talbott, who is expected to begin play with the Seminole County Snappers in the near future.
Florida catcher Wyatt Langford has seen the most action of any Gator so far in the young offseason, appearing in nine games for a total of 29 at-bats with the Charlottesville Tom Sox of the Valley League. Through June 21, Langford leads Charlottesville with a .310 batting average and has racked up three doubles, five RBI, three runs scored and two walks.
Elsewhere, left-handed pitcher Ryan Cabarcas has already appeared in two games and thrown 2.2 innings of relief for the Madison Mallards of the Northwoods League. Right-handed pitcher Blake Purnell rounds out the 2021 summer group, as he will spend the months ahead playing for the Peninsula Pilots of the Coastal Plains League. To this point, Purnell has made two appearances including one start for a total of 4.1 innings pitched while registering his first two strikeouts of the summer season.
