GAINESVILLE, Fla. — One of the Gators student-athletes with the largest social media following — she has nearly 180,000 combined followers on Instagram and Twitter — Morgan Hurd is a newcomer to the UF gymnastics team.
For her fans around the world awaiting Hurd's collegiate debut, the wait is going to be longer than expected. Hurd announced on social media Monday night that she underwent knee surgery to repair a torn ACL.

The 20-year-old Hurd joined the Gators for the spring semester after spending the fall traveling with U.S. National Team members on the Gold Over America Tour. Born in China, Hurd grew up in Middletown, Del., and blossomed as one of the top elite gymnasts in the country.
Hurd gained international notoriety in 2017 when she won the all-around gold at the World Championships in Montreal. Hurd supported her new teammates at Friday night's season-opening win but did not compete.
"Apparently, I partially tore my ACL last year and just didn't know," Hurd posted Monday night after surgery. "And then tore the rest about a week before leaving for UF."
Hurd was on pace to make the U.S. team for the Tokyo Summer Games until a series of elbow injuries derailed her Olympic bid. The No. 2-ranked Gators host Alabama on Sunday afternoon (3 p.m., ABC) in the first NCAA Gymnastics regular-season meet to be broadcast live on one of the three major networks.
